Maltese Sign Language Council chair Annabelle Xerri warned that requests for interpretation were growing faster than the available professional workforce. The shortage can delay or restrict Deaf people’s access to medical appointments, court hearings, job interviews, media and public events. Xerri said existing interpreters work tirelessly but cannot meet the volume of demand. A new University of Malta diploma in applied linguistics for Maltese Sign Language is intended to train more interpreters and educators. Legal recognition in 2016 and a 2025 warranting law established language access as a right and formalised professional standards.
