Large parts of Malta and Gozo lost electricity on Wednesday evening after an interruption at the gas facilities serving the Electrogas power station removed about 200MW of generation capacity. Enemalta said the sudden shortfall required temporary supply cuts to protect the wider grid while standby plants were activated. Outages were reported in numerous localities, including Qormi, Żebbuġ, Birkirkara, Marsaskala, Żejtun, Mosta, San Ġwann and Mellieħa, as well as much of Gozo. Power returned progressively through alternative generation. At the time of reporting, Enemalta was still establishing the interruption’s exact cause.
