A Central Bank analysis of Eurostat projections estimates that Malta’s population would fall to about 530,000 by 2050 and 252,000 by 2100 if migration stopped completely after 2025. In that scenario, the old-age dependency ratio would rise from 26.6% to 104%, leaving residents aged 65 and over more numerous than those aged 15 to 64. This is an alternative modelling scenario, not the baseline forecast. The baseline instead projects a rise from 574,250 in 2025 to a 766,348 peak in 2073, before easing to 723,710 by 2100.
