State and EU subsidies to Malta’s agricultural sector rose 4.7% in 2025 to €28.7 million, equal to 20.2% of total output, according to NSO data. Agricultural output slipped 0.1% to €141.8 million while intermediate costs increased 0.9% to €87.9 million, pushing gross value added down 1.7% to €53.9 million. Wages rose 10.6% and veterinary costs 12.4%. Beef, fruit and wine output grew, but rabbit meat and vegetables declined. The figures underline the pressure created by Malta’s small holdings, expensive land, drought risk and heavy dependence on imported food.
