Mater Dei Hospital has carried out Malta’s first implantation of a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker. One miniature device is placed in the right atrium and another in the right ventricle, where they communicate to coordinate pacing without conventional leads or a pocket beneath the skin. The system can suit selected patients with previous device infections, higher infection risk or difficult upper-limb vein access. Clinical trials began in 2022, while Mater Dei introduced single-chamber leadless pacing in 2023.
